An incessant ballet

Influenced by the position of the stars (the Sun and the Moon), there are two kinds of tides: the neap tides which provoke weak water displacements and the spring tides which generate great flows.

During the strong tides, the sea comes to completely surround the rock. The most spectacular tides are observed at two times of the year: during the spring and fall equinoxes. During these tides, the sea can retreat up to 15km, but beware: when it comes back up it does so very quickly.

The tidal bore: a wave of legend

The wave that accompanies the rise of the waters of these high tides is called the tidal bore. The legend says that it progresses at the speed of a galloping horse, but in reality it advances at an average of 6km/h! Don't be reckless though, it is strongly advised not to venture into the bay alone. If you want to learn more about the tides, the tidal bore or the bay, we advise you to contact guides who know the bay like the back of their hand.
